Relief registers, 1913-1929.

The Division of Aid and Relief (through its Subdivision of Mothers' Aid) and its predecessor were responsible for the welfare of adult poor without legal settlement, either confined to state medical facilities or provided with public relief by local authorities. Pursuant to St 1913, c 763, ss 5-7, this function included supervision of the work of the local overseers of the poor in relief of mothers with dependent children under the age of fourteen. Registers were created as a listing by municipality of amounts reimbursed to each for funds expended in such relief. Amount of reimbursement varied in respect to whether or not family members had legal settlement in the Commonwealth (defined by St 1911, c 669 as continuous residence for five years in a given municipality).
